Bike Repair Program FAQs

Is there a fee to participate in the Bike Reuse Program?
No, there is no cost to participate in the program.

How does the program work?
  • Eligible organizations submit a completed application form, identifying how bikes collected will be used for the purposes of repair and/or reuse.
  • Once an application has been assessed and approved, organizations must complete a waiver.
  • Approved organizations will be responsible for picking up bikes as coordinated with the City. The City will not provide delivery services.
  • All bikes are provided in as-is condition and may be incomplete, damaged and in need of repair. The City does not guarantee the safety, quality or usability of any bike provided.
  • Recipient organizations are solely responsible for assessing, repairing and ensuring bikes are in a safe and dependable condition before distributing to the community for reuse.
  • Following participation, the recipient organization must complete a feedback form on how the bikes were used for the purposes of repair and/or reuse, and for community benefit.
  • The number of bikes available and allocated to each approved organization is dependent on bikes received at the Recycling Depot and may vary.

Can a person, not an organization, apply to receive bikes from the Bike Reuse Program?
No. The program is only available to eligible organizations and not individual residents. Information about organizations receiving bikes and those accepting inquiries about available refurbished bikes will be posted on richmond.ca/rethink, as available.

Where do the bikes for the program come from?
The bikes made available for eligible organizations are bikes that were brought to the Richmond Recycling Depot and have been set aside for the purpose of the Bike Reuse Program.

Can I drop off a bike in working condition to be included in Bike Reuse Program?
Please consider donating or repairing your bike before bringing them to the Richmond Recycling Depot. Bikes left at the Recycling Depot can be considered end-of-life and may not make it into circulation for the Bike Reuse Program. For a comprehensive list of donation locations and repair options in Richmond visit richmond.ca/rethink.

Are bike parts and bike accessories a part of the Bike Reuse Program?
No, bike parts and bike accessories are not included in the program.

Are e-bikes and e-scooters part of the Bike Reuse Program?
No, e-bikes and e-scooters are not included in the program. These items are currently handled within the established extended producer responsibility program EPRA for recycling at the Depot.

What happens to bikes that can’t be reused or repaired through the Bike Reuse Program?
Bikes that can’t be reused or repaired will be recycled at the Recycling Depot.

Why was the Bike Reuse Program created?
An estimated ten to fifteen bikes are collected each week for recycling through the Large Item Pick Up Program and public drop off at the Richmond Recycling Depot that may have the potential to be repaired and reused. To support the community and the Richmond Circular City Strategy, the City launched the Bike Reuse Program in January 2026 to keep these bikes in circulation for as long as possible.

Clothing Reuse

Donation and recycling can help keep clothing and textiles out of the garbage.

20-25% of donated clothing is resold or reused locally as the volume of donations is higher than the demand. The remaining clothes are sold to used clothing brokers, who sort and sell clothing to markets where they can be sold, and some is ultimately disposed in the garbage.
