Public Works Open House returns May 30

Residents of all ages are invited to explore the essential services that help keep Richmond safe, healthy and connected at the City’s annual Public Works Open House from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday, May 30 at the Operations Yard, 5599 Lynas Lane.

“From roads and flood protection to parks and emergency services, public works plays an essential role in our everyday lives,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “This event invites the community to learn more about these important services through interactive and family-friendly activities.”

Activities and attractions include:

  • Interactive and educational exhibits
  • A Discovery Passport experience across 12 event areas
  • Heavy equipment displays featuring dump trucks, graders and backhoes
  • Live entertainment and music
  • Richmond Fire-Rescue and other community partners
  • The Kidstruction play area for children
  • A hands-on planting station
  • Food trucks with food and snacks available for purchase

Event parking is limited so walking, carpooling, cycling, rolling or taking public transit is highly encouraged. Overflow parking will be available at the Austria Club (5851 Westminster Highway) and Blair Elementary School (6551 Lynas Lane). Free shuttle service will run continuously from 10:30am to 3:30pm between the City’s Operations Yard and Blair Elementary School. Wheel Watch will also be on site to securely store bicycles, scooters, wagons and strollers for free during the event.

Richmond’s Public Works Open House is held in celebration of National Public Works Week (May 17 to 23, 2026). Guided by this year’s theme, “Rooted in service, powered by community,” the event highlights the commitment of City staff who work together to deliver the infrastructure and services that keep Richmond running smoothly.
