Statement on the Vancouver Festival Tragedy

Philippine flag waving in remembrance and solidarity

"On behalf of Council and the City of Richmond, we extend our condolences and deepest sympathies to everyone affected by the tragic incident at Vancouver’s Lapu-Lapu Day festival on Saturday, April 26. The loss of eleven cherished members of the Filipino Canadian community and the injuries suffered by many others have touched us profoundly.

Richmond mourns alongside our neighbours in Vancouver and the wider Filipino community. We recognize that many Richmond residents may have attended the celebration or have loved ones who were present when the tragedy occurred. We encourage anyone who is experiencing distress to reach out for help.

As a sign of respect, the City will lower all flags to half-mast at City Hall during the week of April 28.

Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted, including the first responders who acted with courage and compassion."

Mayor Malcolm Brodie
City of Richmond
