Award-winning giant pumpkin on display at Richmond’s Halloween Fireworks Festival

Award-winning 1,003 kilograms (2,212 pounds) pumpkin that will be on display at the City’s Fireworks Festival on Oct 31

Canada’s biggest pumpkin this year and one of the world’s 20 largest pumpkins was grown in Richmond and will be part of the City’s Firework Festival on Tuesday, October 31.

The City acquired the Instagram-worthy pumpkin from local, Dave Chan, who grew the 1,003 kilograms (2,212 pounds) pumpkin. Chan won the title at the Hard Rock Casino National Weigh Off in Sacramento, California last month. Some amazing facts about this award-winning pumpkin include it:

  • was grown from a seed that came from Spain
  • is one of only 78 pumpkins in the world to be a member of the 2,200 club – an exclusive group of pumpkins that have surpassed the 2,200 pound mark
  • grew an average of 40 pounds per day from July 1 to July 23

The public is invited to take selfies and meet Dave Chan at this year’s free event in Minoru Park (7191 Granville Avenue) from 6:30 to 8:45pm. Other Fireworks Festival activities include:

  • watch stage performers including a magician, jugglers and musicians, take in the roaming performers including face painters and stilt walkers
  • participate in games and activities led by City Centre Community Association’s youth leadership group
  • visit the onsite food trucks for hot dogs, mini donuts and beverages including bubble tea
  • view the 15-minute fireworks finale that starts at 8:30pm
