Biography
Kai Liu is a Chinese-Canadian artist, educator, and researcher based in BC, currently residing in Richmond, whose practice is rooted in painting and extends into printmaking and mixed media. Working within a semi-abstract framework, he explores landscapes shaped by nature, perception, and the lived experience of migration, drawing on Eastern aesthetics and the negotiation of cross-cultural identity.
Liu holds both a BFA and an MFA from Emily Carr University. His research project, Innovating Chinese Printmaking: Contemporary Praxis, supported by the Canada Council, investigates ways to integrate traditional Chinese woodblock printmaking into contemporary artistic practice. His work has been exhibited across Canada and featured in various publications. In 2026, he was artist-in-residence at Branscombe House, Richmond.
