Disability Voices

Art, Story and Belonging

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is recognized annually on December 3.

The United Nations recognizes this day to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at every level of society and to raise awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of political, social, economic and cultural life.

In recognition of this day, the City, in collaboration with the Richmond Public Library, Richmond Art Gallery, and Cinevolution Media Arts Society, is hosting a series of free events that promote disability inclusion and reduce stigma through the arts. These events are centred around the diverse voices, experiences and perspectives of people with disabilities.

All events are free. Space is limited and registration is required.

Moving through Bashō's karumi (lightness) and Shōnagon's okashi (delighted noticing), she traces what remains when the expected life falls away - and whether it's enough to build from. Dr. Keiko Honda is an epidemiologist whose life changed after a rare autoimmune disease led to long term wheelchair use.

This presentation will be an afternoon of reading, reflection and conversation about what we carry, what endures and what it means to pay attention. Books will be available for purchase, with a signing to follow.
