Displaying vibrant, colourful, dreamy, playful and at times absurd art works, Ongoing / Pacific Crossings highlights the eclectic range of contemporary art practices from Tokyo that examine new possibilities for “alternativeness”—in both art and life. The exhibition is the culmination of a seven-year cultural exchange between Richmond Art Gallery, independent curator Makiko Hara and Nozomu Ogawa, Director of Art Center Ongoing. Since its founding in 2008, Art Center Ongoing has provided a vital platform for fostering alternative and experimental contemporary art practices in the Tokyo art scene. The exhibition presents works by eleven Japanese artists affiliated with Art Centre Ongoing, and Vancouver-based artist Karilynn Ming Ho.
