Description of Work

This sculpture incorporates a dynamic spectrum of materials, wedding the rough surface of welded Cor-Ten steel with the organic smoothness of Carrara marble. These striking and contrasting "hemispheres", comprising the open wheel of the sculpture, are supported by a structure of geometric granite forms, mounted on an oval granite base.

Artist Statement

Of greatest importance to me was a design that could establish immediate harmony with both the plaza's encompassing architecture and the anticipated pedestrian traffic that is to energize the site. The wheel, supported by the intended granite structure, struck me as an ideal form, one that would emphasize the financial centre's curving facade and accentuate the idea of a nucleus of activity. Simultaneously, the work retains both a minimalist beauty and an unswerving loyalty to the rigorous purity of geometric abstractionism. While solid and engaging, the work's inclusion of open space renders it a kind of window, inviting the public to frame nearby vistas and imprison their relentless motion, supplying a metaphoric lens that is at once homage to the cyclical advent of time and space.
