Artist Statement

This artwork is a tribute to the artist’s ancestors who have lived along the Fraser River for countless generations. It thoughtfully reflects the deep history of the land, illustrating how Richmond has developed over time—as glacial till helped form the river delta—under the watchful eyes of her people. The woven basket pattern symbolizes the enduring presence and resilience of the Coast Salish peoples, for whom weaving was not only a vital tradition but also a form of cultural expression. Through her intricate design, Cannell weaves together Richmond’s past with its continually evolving present, highlighting her culture that remains vibrant, living, and deeply rooted in place.
