Freedom of the City

Freedom of the City is a historic and highly symbolic ceremony in which a municipality formally honours a military unit for its long-standing service, trust, and connection to the community.

During the event, the honoured unit is granted the privilege to parade through the city “with drums beating, colours flying, and bayonets fixed,” a symbolic gesture that reflects the confidence and respect the community has for its soldiers. This parade often includes a formal challenge by local authorities or police, reaffirming the long-standing custom of granting armed troops special permission to enter a city’s limits.
