Description of Work

"Cluster" is a circular arrangement of 25 355mm-diameter painted aluminum cylinders of varied

lengths spot-welded into two identical round faceplates and attached to an existing base. This

site-specific design creates the appearance of extruding from the last guideway segment of the

Canada Line elevated rapid-transit structure.

Artist Statement

"Cluster" is designed with the commuter-viewer in mind, offering shifting views at various

distances and positions, from a circle-within-circle pattern as seen from the south end of No. 3

Road, to a bright horizontally striped field at the entrance of Brighouse Station.

The bold palette, drawn from the coded colours used in fiber-optic wiring, and the random

lengths of angled pipes work together to create a visual spark against the surrounding

monolithic concrete structure. This work is an extension of an art practice devoted to exploring

connections between realms of the handmade and the mechanical, the domestic and the

industrial.
