Description of Work
Instant Coffee’s shimmering mural Perpetual Sunset fills the west-facing wall of the Camino Development Project in Richmond, BC, Canada. Spanning over 80 feet wide and 40 feet high, the mural made of nearly 40,000 individual reflective coloured sequins is designed to catch the natural light, most directly echoing the setting sun. The immense scale of the artwork creates a mirroring effect that extends the sun’s rays and sustains this daily occurrence in its refraction.
Artist Statement
Perpetual Sunset, a mural spanning over 80 feet wide and 40 feet high, is made of nearly 40,000 individual reflective coloured sequins designed to catch the natural light, most directly echoing the setting sun.
The immense scale of the artwork creates a mirroring effect that extends the sun’s rays and sustains this daily occurrence in its refraction. This romantic gesture to portray, capture and prolong the majesty of the sunset is an attempt to encapsulate a general appreciation for this natural happening, and begets an almost ritualistic representation of it. There are thousands of postcards of sunsets and most everyone has tried to capture the vivid intensity of at least one. Instant Coffee builds on this shared infatuation and need to represent an everyday event, yet simultaneously rivals this desire by portraying the sunset on a grand scale that extends its physical properties.
Instant Coffee is a service oriented curatorial and artist collective based in Toronto and Vancouver. Members include Jinhan Ko, Kelly Lycan, Khan Lee, Jenifer Papararo, with auxiliary members Cecilia Berkovic and Kate Monro.
