The City of Richmond has long been a leader in improving accessibility for residents and visitors. The new 10-year draft Richmond Accessibility Plan 2023–2033 (the Plan), created by the City, represents Richmond’s ongoing dedication to strengthening meaningful access for all members of the community. This comprehensive framework will guide the advancement of accessibility in Richmond and outlines ways to identify, remove and prevent barriers experienced by people with disabilities when interacting with the City and Richmond Public Library.
The City and Library are now seeking public input on the draft Plan. Feedback collected through the engagement process will be used to help finalize the Plan, to be presented to City Council in winter 2024.
The public can participate in engagement and help shape the final Plan from Monday, November 6 to Sunday, December 3, 2023 in the following ways:
- Online: Visit LetsTalkRichmond.ca/AccessibilityPlan2023 to learn more and complete a survey by 11:59pm on Sunday, December 3.
- In-person: Connect with City and Library representatives and complete a survey at one of the following pop-up events in Richmond. Access to ASL interpretation will also be provided:
- Thursday, November 9 from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Richmond Centre for Disability, 5300 No. 3 Road, Unit 842
- Wednesday, November 15 from 4:00 to 6:00pm at Ironwood Library, 11688 Steveston Highway, Unit 8200
- Saturday, November 18 from 10:00am to noon at City Centre Community Centre, 5900 Minoru Boulevard
- Additional support: Facilitated one-on-one and small group survey supports are available virtually, by phone and in-person. Email Accessibility@richmond.ca to request additional support in your preferred format.
Building on the City’s achievements and learnings to date, the Richmond Accessibility Plan responds to one of the initial requirements of the Accessible British Columbia Act, which requires municipalities and libraries to develop a multi-year accessibility plan.
