Our island City is located within one of the most productive ecosystems in the world. Every department and business unit at the City is in some way involved in the community and the global effort to be more sustainable and reduce our environmental impact.
The Sustainability Framework adopted by the City in 2010 is helping to coordinate and foster these efforts, measure their success and set new benchmarks. The Framework has guided the development of Richmond’s 2041 Official Community Plan. A key component of the plan is the Ecological Network in which larger ‘hubs”, smaller “sites” and interconnecting corridors may act to conserve and connect natural and semi-natural areas within our urban and agricultural setting.
A sustainable and healthy island city that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is a place where people live, work, and prosper in a welcoming, connected, accessible and vibrant community. In Richmond, the health of the people and the health of the eco-system are sustained through community participation and long-term economic, social and environmental well-being.
