Steveston open for business in pedestrian-friendly style
07 August 2020
The village of Steveston, already one of the Lower Mainland’s most popular destinations, is even more shopper and visitor friendly thanks to changes to make it a safer, more pedestrian accessible location.
The City of Richmond has implemented changes to traffic patterns in August that expand the sidewalks and allow more space for physical distancing and safer foot and cycle movement.
From now until September 7, Bayview Street is one-way westbound while Moncton Street is one-way eastbound, enabling a clockwise loop for vehicle traffic through the village. Even more importantly, people can now walk around the village and easily maintain physical distancing and be clear of vehicles.
The changes are aimed at making Steveston safer for visitors and residents alike as they enjoy its vibrant, diverse shopping village and friendly community environment during the popular summer period.
Many businesses welcomed the idea of making the village more accessible and pedestrian friendly and the City and its Economic Development office will continue to work with merchants to address any concerns that arise during the temporary changes. The temporary road changes have little impact on parking, with several pay and free parking areas still available around the area. A downloadable map of the parking areas is available at www.businessinrichmond.ca/steveston-village-parking-map/.
The City is also encouraging businesses to make use of the expanded sidewalk space by submitting a temporary patio application. The program enables all businesses – not just cafes, eateries and pubs – to make use of sidewalk space to promote and market their wares. There is no cost to apply and the guidelines and application form are available by contacting the Business Support Centre at 604-276-4114; businesshelp@richmond.ca, or by visiting www.businessinrichmond.ca/covid-19.
The village of Steveston offers a myriad of cafes, restaurants and pubs that have safely reopened, along with numerous retail and service merchants. To find out more about what Steveston has to offer, visit www.visitrichmondbc.com/discover-richmond/steveston-village/.
