Richmond reopens daycamps, spray parks and Steveston Outdoor Pool

03 July 2020

The City of Richmond continues to carefully restore recreational programs and amenities with the reopening of the Steveston Outdoor Pool and outdoor spray parks as well as the reintroduction of some outdoor daycamps.

In keeping with safety protocols to reduce the spread of COVID-19, registration is required for access to the Steveston Outdoor Pool and daycamps. Access to the spray parks at Steveston, King George and Burkeville do not require registration.

Registration for the Steveston Outdoor Pool begins on Monday, July 6 at 10 a.m. for access commencing Monday, July 13. Because capacity in the pool must be reduced to ensure physical distancing, people can now only book and pay for a 50-minute session. Users are encouraged to enter and exit the pool in their swimming attire if possible to minimize crowding in change rooms and adhere to safety protocols.

Daycamp registration will commence at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8 for camps starting on Monday, July 13. Parents will be able to sign their preschoolers, children and youth up for a wide range of outdoor camps incorporating a variety of activities such as sports, arts, crafts, music, dance and games. Themed camps include art fusion, sports variety, nature quest and young scientists. Before and after camp care will also be available for registration at some locations.

To reserve a spot in an outdoor summer daycamp or at the Steveston Outdoor pool:

  • Register online at richmond.ca/register using your MyRichmond account. People can set up an account in advance at myrichmond.richmond.ca.
  • Register by calling 604-276-4300.
  • For the Steveston Outdoor Pool, bookings can be done up to seven days in advance and swimmers can book up to two hours in advance of the time of their session if space is available.

While the daycamps and Steveston Outdoor Pool open on July 13, the spray parks in Steveston, King George and Burkeville reopen to the public on Saturday, July 4 will be operational seven days a week from 9 a.m. to dusk, weather permitting. No registration is required and physical distancing rules must be followed.

In keeping with the City’s Restoring Richmond Plan, strict safety protocols will be implemented to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. While each program and amenity will have specific safety requirements in place, daycamp participants, swimmers and spray park users should not have signs or symptoms of COVID-19. They must also not have returned from outside Canada in the previous 14 days or been in contact with someone who has a presumptive or confirmed case of COVID-19.

Daycamps provide opportunities for children and youth to be active, make social connections and learn new skills which are important to their physical and mental wellbeing. Pools and spray parks are excellent locations for families and friends to spend time and even exercise together in outdoor settings and the City encourages people to make use of these amenities in a safe and respectful manner.

Updates to the City’s Restoring Richmond Plan will be shared via the City website at richmond.ca/covid19 and social media channels as they are confirmed.
