Celebrate Earth Day in Richmond by discovering nature in your own backyard

20 April 2020

The City of Richmond is commemorating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day by asking residents to discover nature in their own front and back yards, and immediate neighbourhoods, then share it with their community through social media.

Each year, Earth Day (April 22) inspires global awareness and action on issues related to climate change, environmental sustainability and the protection of nature. Due to the impacts of COVID 19, citizens around the world are taking to digital means to celebrate this important day.

“Earth Day is a powerful reminder that our attitudes and our actions constantly affect our planet,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Now, more than ever, is a great time to celebrate the nature that is in our backyards and outside our front doors. Being in nature is known to reduce stress and promote individual wellbeing, which is important for all of us in these challenging times. However, while exploring their neighbourhoods, residents are encouraged to be responsible in maintaining physical distancing guidelines and avoiding gathering in groups.”

As people spend more time outdoors, the City encourages Richmond residents to pay particular attention to the many aspects of nature all around them. This includes the flowers, plants, trees, insects, birds and wildlife they come across while enjoying their property and on walks.

Residents are encouraged to take photos of what they discover and share their findings on social media using the hashtags #natureinmyneighbourhood, #Richmondhasheart, and #RichmondBC.

By staying close to home and exploring their immediate community, residents can reduce overburdening destination parks and trails. Maintain a minimum two-metre physical distance from others and avoid gatherings.
