Celebrate Canada Day @ Home in Richmond

The Mayor’s Welcome, a mass singing of O Canada and virtual fireworks are just some of the festivities one can enjoy to celebrate Canada’s birthday on Wednesday, July 1—all without leaving the comfort of home. In keeping with COVID-19 guidelines, the Steveston Salmon Festival is reimagining its annual bustling event and shifting to online celebrations with Canada Day at Home.
“2020 will certainly be one for the history books and we hope everyone marking the occasion of Canada Day at Home takes the opportunity to share photos of their family’s celebrations online so we can continue that sense of togetherness which has made the Steveston Salmon Festival so popular,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The City of Richmond is grateful to the Steveston Community Society for taking on the challenge to make their event digital this year.”
Part of this year’s Canada Day at Home celebrations will include a “Home Parade.” Richmond residents are encouraged to find their finest red and white decor and dress up their front lawns, driveways, family and pets to celebrate Canada Day. Though this parade won’t weave its way through Steveston Village, it will be on display for all to see on the City’s @funRichmond Instagram account, using the hashtag #RichmondBCParade.
From the images submitted, 10 finalists in each of the five categories will be selected and the winners will be voted on by the public after Canada Day. Categories include Best Home Exterior/Driveway, Best Dressed Family, Best Dressed Pet, Best Decorated Bike and Best “Parade,” where participants are encouraged to film a short video of their family on parade in their yard, home or balcony. The winner in each category will be announced on Tuesday, July 7 and will be awarded a $100 prize from a Richmond-based business.
As Richmond residents dig out decorations, they are asked to take a trip down memory lane by rounding up any Steveston Salmon Festival memorabilia they may have from the past seven decades. The festival is doing a call out for photos and treasures related to its past for a special project that will mark the festival’s 75th anniversary next year.
