Richmond wins UBCM Community Excellence Award for Child Care Needs Assessment and Strategy
25 September 2019
The City of Richmond’s long-standing commitment to ensure child care needs are met now and in the future has earned the City the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) Community Excellence Award for governance. The honour was announced at the UBCM annual conference, in Vancouver, last night.
“Winning the UBCM award for our 2017–2022 Richmond Child Care Needs Assessment and Strategy emphasizes our priority goal and commitment to develop short-term and long-term comprehensive child care services,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The strategy is a critical and innovative tool to guide and provide a framework for quality child care and a network of related services.”
The City of Richmond’s investment in a municipal child care strategy began in 1991. The vision for the current five year strategy is for Richmond to build on those three decades of work to continue to be a municipal leader in fostering conditions for a comprehensive child care system.
Developed with community participation from public and child care operator focus groups and surveys, as well as stakeholder engagement, the award-winning strategy was commended for being outcomes-based with short-term and long-term actions. Its commitment to inclusiveness and representing the needs of Richmond’s diverse community was also noted.
The strategy identifies emerging trends in early child development and early learning including securing Early Childhood Development Hubs with co-located child care and family support services, and the importance of multi-lingual community engagement. It is recognized as a high-quality resource among other municipalities and the City has established itself as a leader in the creation of community child care spaces.
