Move more, sit less with over 60 free activities during Move for Health Week
08 May 2019
The City of Richmond is celebrating Move for Health Week by offering more than 60 free or low cost activities in recreation facilities throughout the city. From Saturday, May 11 through Friday, May 17, indoor and outdoor activities for all ages and abilities will be available ranging from Zumba at the new Minoru Centre for Active Living, fitness workshops at various community centres and a community bike ride along the Railway Greenway. A list of all the activities can be found online at www.richmond.ca/moveforhealth.
Move for Health Week is part of Richmond’s Global Active Cities – Active Well-being Initiative. The City of Richmond is proud to be certified as one of the world’s first Global Active Cities. This designation recognizes the City’s leadership in promoting active lifestyles, healthy eating and mental wellness. The goal of this initiative is to help reverse the trend of inactivity. Many Canadians are not getting enough physical activity and spending too much time in front of screens. The City and its community partners want Richmond residents to be more active, healthy and happy as physical activity and sport are known to bring many benefits in improving well-being and enhancing social and mental health. More active people means more healthy people.
During Move for Health Week, Richmond is focusing on the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology’s new Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines. By moving more and sitting less, the City, community partners and residents are all closer to the goal of a happier and healthier community. The guidelines for all ages can be found at https://csepguidelines.ca/.
