Pop-up bat booths coming to Richmond in July
27 June 2022
Three free pop-up bat stewardship booths are planned for Richmond parks in early July giving the public a unique opportunity to ask questions about bats, view real specimens and play fun kid bat games.
A local bat consultant and regional bat coordinator for the Community Bat Programs of BC will be on site from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the following parks:
- Friday, July 1: Garry Point Park (12011 Seventh Avenue)
- Sunday, July 3: Terra Nova Adventure Play Environment (2340 River Road)
- Tuesday, July 5: McLean Neighbourhood Park (22500 McLean Avenue)
Residents and visitors are encouraged to come out and add to the Richmond Batabase Board. This large aerial map will pinpoint where residents have seen bats and where local roosts exist. The data collected will help Richmond protect important bat habitat areas, help properly manage roosts scheduled for exclusions, and identify areas where alternate habitat for bats may be needed.
The bat stewardships booths are hosted in collaboration with the City of Richmond, Coastal Partners in Conservation Society, Athene Ecological, the South Coast Bat Conservation Society, the Community Bat Programs of BC, and the Beaty Museum.
Richmond is a Bat-Friendly Community, receiving its certification from the Community Bat Programs of BC in January 2020. Since then, Richmond has committed to help local bats by protecting and creating bat habitat, providing bat information to residents, and promoting learning about bats.
