In-person or online, indoors or outdoors, the City of Richmond and community partners have planned over 40 family-friendly activities to do together over the upcoming Family Day weekend.

Register for any of the free and low-cost activities listed below and get ready to be active and enjoy time together!

Many of these free activities are made possible thanks to the financial support of the Government of British Columbia.

Family Day at Minoru Centre for Active Living (Theme: Amazon Jungle) - Drop-In
Enjoy the many features Minoru Centre for Active Living offers, but in the spirit of the Amazon Jungle! Race down the slides, race up the climbing wall, ride the enormous floating animals, float down the lazy river or challenge a family member on the inflatable obstacle course (the Wibit). There’s an activity for everyone! While kids are splashing around adults can take the time to work out, swim laps or water jog in one of the two 25m lap pools followed with a visit to the cold plunge, adult or family hot tub, or sauna or steam room.

All families are also welcome to register for one of the 45-minute modified Swim to Survive programs to gain the knowledge of how to survive an unexpected fall into deep water. Registration required.

The updated experience invites you be hands-on with history. Come visit to explore exciting interactive displays, a three-dimensional timeline, and a light up map that traces the routes of the historic interurban tram. Take souvenir photos with our Junior Tram Conductor dress-up costumes. See the new LEGO model of Tram Car 1220 and the Steveston Tram Barn, by local LEGO creator Peter Grant. This interactive, app-based experience is a virtual scavenger hunt for the whole family! Players download the interactive app onto a smartphone (QR code at Nature House front desk) and are guided by GPS to various locations. Explore the arts through magical storytelling, exciting acrobatic and dance shows, and a variety of musical entertainment. Visit Richmond Children's Arts Festival for a complete list of activities.

This annual festival sparks the imagination and curiosity of children through music, hands-on art activities and literary and performing arts workshops. In 2023, the festival will deliver arts outreach programs for Richmond elementary schools and a series of free activities for the general public on BC Family Day. The Festival is sponsored by Lansdowne Mall. 

We are Made of Water
Join artists Dolores Altin and Elvira Monteforte in a hands-on painting activity as part of their installation “We are Made of Water”. Come and explore Three Hemispherias: Blue Planet, Ice House, Bubble House, made out of recycled plastics. Listen to the sound of water in its many different forms. The artists aim to create a unique experience that will activate the Richmond Cultural Centre Plaza and raise awareness of plastic pollution in oceans, and water as a precious resource to be protected for future generations.

Visit the Richmond Art Gallery for a family-friendly tour of the exhibitions CODES OF SILENCE, a group exhibition of video art, and Mike Bourscheid: Sunny Side Up and Other Sorrowful Stories which includes costumes, puppets, and props alongside the short film Agnes, which draws from his childhood and relationship with his parents. Visitors of all ages can get hands on with interactive exhibits that include using dance steps on the floor, playing a street piano decorated with flowers by a Richmond artist, creating calligraphy on Buddha boards, and designing new street banners for neighbourhoods.
