The friendship city relationship between Richmond and Qingdao was established on April 21, 2008.
Qingdao is a major city in eastern Shandong Province, eastern China, with a population of over 8.715 million (2010 census). Qingdao has a total area of 10,654 square kilometres.
- July 2016 - The Sister City Advisory Committee hosted the Richmond Sister-Friendship Youth Table Tennis Tournament. Student teams from Xiamen, Qingdao and Richmond came together to experience the excitement and challenge of playing against outstanding table tennis players in this three day event.
- September 2014 - Supported by the City of Richmond, through the Sister City Advisory Committee, the Steveston Judo Club hosted a Judo club from Qingdao.
- October 2013 - the Qingdao Xiabaifan Art School, a famous dance school, performed "From East to West" at the River Rock Show Theatre to commemorate the 5th Friendship anniversary between Richmond and Qingdao. The performance attracted approximately 820 attendees.
- February 2011 - the Sister City Advisory Committee attended a New Years dinner hosted by the Qingdao Fellowship Association.
Lying across the Shandong Peninsula while looking out to the Yellow Sea, Qingdao is a major seaport, naval base, and industrial centre. It is also the site of the Tsingtao Brewery. The world's longest sea bridge, the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, links the main urban area of Qingdao with Huangdao district, straddling the Jiaozhou Bay sea areas. In 2009, Qingdao is named China's most livable city by the Chinese Institute of City Competitiveness.
The year 2018 marked the 10th anniversary of Richmond's Friendship relationship with Qingdao, China.
