Richmond's Recycled Asphalt Pavement project was selected for setting new standards and demonstrating innovation, excellence, and success in balancing the community's economic, environmental, and social needs.

Athletic Business

Athletic Business Facilities of Merit Award

Minoru Centre for Active Living, the City of Richmond’s new state-of-the-art fitness and aquatic facility, was recognized by Athletic Business as one of their 10 Facilities of Merit for 2022. It was selected for setting a new standard for wellness-oriented facilities which balances the needs of traditional aquatic uses while integrating a wide variety of other amenities that encourage healthy lifestyles, especially for an older-adult population.

ParticipACTION - Community Better Challenge

British Columbia’s Most Active Community Award

ParticipACTION promoted a nation-wide physical activity initiative in June 2022, encouraging all Canadians to get active. The award recognizes the community’s activity levels and the creative ways staff and community partners in Richmond motivated the community to get physically active throughout the challenge.

Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada

Canadian Award for Financial Reporting & Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting

The City’s 2020 Annual Report was honoured with two awards. The City received the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for its official 2020 annual report, and the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting for the summary report.

Regulatory Challenge

The City’s Corporate Hazardous Materials Management Training was recognized in the Regulatory Challenge category at the organization’s 2021 Environmental Awards Gala.

The Mitchell Island Stewardship Initiative was awarded the Discharge Control Award at the organization’s 2021 Environmental Awards Gala.

International Olympic Committee, International Paralympic Committee, and International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities

Architecture Prize for Accessibility

The Minoru Centre for Active Living, the City of Richmond’s new state-of-the-art fitness and aquatic facility, has received the 2021 Architecture Prize for Accessibility from the International Olympic Committee, International Paralympic Committee, and International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities. The annual Distinction for Accessibility Award aims to increase the accessibility of all sports and leisure facilities and architectural structures worldwide so that everyone has an opportunity to practice and view sport freely and without barriers.
 2021  Community Energy Association Climate & Energy Action Award
The Community Energy Association, a member-based, non-profit organization aiming to reduce emissions, conserve energy and progressively transition to a low carbon, resilient economy, named the City of Richmond recipient of its Climate & Energy Action Award for its successful District Energy Utility Program. The program now provides 22 buildings and over five million square feet of floor space with energy that is reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 7,800 tonnes – the equivalent of removing 2,000 cars from our roads each year.
 2021  Union of BC Municipalities Community Excellence Award

The Union of BC Municipalities, which represents and advocates to government on behalf of municipalities across British Columbia, presented the City of Richmond with an Honorable Mention in the Community Excellence Award – Service Delivery category for customer-friendly upgrades to its Works Yard Recycling Depot.

The Energy Globe Foundation

Canadian Energy Globe National Award

The Energy Globe Foundation, an international organization that recognizes projects that conserve energy and utilize renewable or emission-free sources, has awarded the City of Richmond the 2020 Canadian Energy Globe National Award for the Central at Garden City expansion of the Alexandra District Energy Utility (ADEU). This award is presented annually to projects focusing on energy efficiency, renewable energies and the conversation of resources.

BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA)

Facility Excellence Award

The restoration of the century old Edwardian Cottage at Terra Nova Rural Park was given the Provincial Facility Excellence Award for projects under $1 million by the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA). The annual award recognizes outstanding facility design that reflects community culture and spaces that are accessible, engage community members in design consultation and ultimately improve the well-being of the community.
