Cultural Centre Mural
Description of Work:
This 1000 ft long mural wraps the circumference of the Richmond Cultural Centre in a frieze design that evolves through four seasons. It also reflects the activities of the centre, the cultural landscape of Richmond, and some of the industry and creative textures of the city. The input of community-sourced imagery allowed for a broad spectrum of expression.
The artists’ concept for the mural is layered. The mural includes both formalistic abstract
passages, as well as specific and recognizable imagery. Portraying the four seasons,
the artists aim was to create subtle transitions throughout. North/winter, East/spring,
South/summer and West/fall. This underlying element gives a structure to the design,
which was then interwoven with stencils, free-hand drawn motifs and symbols.
