Description of Work:
This sculpture incorporates a dynamic spectrum of materials, wedding the rough surface of welded Cor-Ten steel with the organic smoothness of Carrara marble. These striking and contrasting "hemispheres", comprising the open wheel of the sculpture, are supported by a structure of geometric granite forms, mounted on an oval granite base.
Of greatest importance to me was a design that could establish immediate harmony with both the plaza's encompassing architecture and the anticipated pedestrian traffic that is to energize the site. The wheel, supported by the intended granite structure, struck me as an ideal form, one that would emphasize the financial centre's curving facade and accentuate the idea of a nucleus of activity.
