Following BC’s COVID-19 Public Health Guidance, the School Art Program has shifted online and is now offering video art lessons, classroom art kits and limited tour opportunities for students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. The Richmond Art Gallery’s School Program introduces students of all ages to the exciting world of contemporary art through interactive gallery tours and hands-on art workshops. Led by professional art educators, curriculum-based programs encourage students to make personal connections with art while developing critical thinking skills and exploring diverse perspectives.
Gallery Tour & Art Workshop – Preschool to Grade 7
Reflecting on the exhibition themes and content, students can express their own ideas through art by experimenting with different art mediums and processes. Teacher Guides are provided with optional pre- and post-visit classroom activities. All programs are adapted to age and grade level. Morning and afternoon sessions are available for a maximum of 30 students.

Free Tours for Secondary Classes
Viewing and discussing contemporary art is an excellent way to engage students with current issues while developing visual literacy and critical thinking skills. Book a free guided tour by one of our art educators. Gallery-based activities can be arranged to integrate with your subject area.
Youth Art +Culture Lab

These sessions are an exciting partnership between Emily Carr University and Richmond Art Gallery that provide youth (12-15 years) the opportunity to build confidence and develop diverse creative skills through behind the scenes, hands-on and interactive sessions with local and international artists, art gallery professionals and Emily Carr instructors. Sessions are held on-site at both the Richmond Art Gallery and Emily Carr University campus in Vancouver. Tuition fee: $463.50.

Provincial Teacher Pro-D Day Workshop

This full day workshop begins with a Gallery tour followed by a creativity-packed day of classroom-friendly art projects on the theme of Japanese culture inspired by our current exhibitions. Cindy Mochizuki explores traditional Japanese folklore and ritual through a multimedia installation, and Jon Sasaki embodies the resilience of his Japanese-Canadian heritage through performance. This workshop includes all art materials, lesson plans and light refreshments. Lunch is not included.

Looking for some creative inspiration for your next staff pro-D workshop? Come to the art gallery for an energizing day packed with art projects that integrate Big Ideas, Content and Skills Development. Learn effective strategies for teaching art concepts and techniques, and practical ways to integrate visual art across the curriculum. Choose a theme or work with us to create a customized workshop for your staff. Available year round.
