Arts Centre Instructors

The Richmond Arts Centre is proud to offer classes taught by some of the best and brightest instructors from around Metro Vancouver. Below are brief introductions and qualifications of some of instructors.

Dance

Bailey Madill - Ballet
Bailey Madill was born and raised in Kamloops, BC, where she began her training at The Dance Gallery under the direction of Maureen Duggan and Marylou Joseph. After a summer spent at Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, at age 16, she moved to Vancouver to study at The Goh Ballet Academy. Following that, Bailey completed a year at Coastal City Ballet and two years in the Richmond Academy of Dance's professional division. She had the privilege of working with many revered teachers and choreographers during her time in Vancouver. In 2014, Bailey moved to Kelowna to work as a trainee with Ballet Kelowna, under the direction of Simone Orlando. She spent the year understudying and collaborating on the choreographic process. In 2015/16, she had an apprentice contract with Ballet Edmonton, where she performed in many classical and neo-classical works choreographed by director Jorden Morris (formerly of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet).

Bailey is currently back in Vancouver, freelancing, traveling to auditions for ballet companies in Europe and throughout Canada, and exploring lessons in singing and acting. In the last few years, she danced in a BOSE headphones commercial, was a dancer in Vancouver Opera's Turandot, was a guest artist with Richmond Academy of Dance as the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, and most recently spent the winter in Montreal to perform in the Nutcracker and tour throughout Quebec with Ballet Ouest de Montreal.

Aubrey Walker - Ballet
Aubrey began her classical ballet training at eight years old with Barbara Stuart from The Royal Ballet of London and at 12 years old continued training under Lila Zali formerly of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. At 15 years old Ms. Walker became a member of Ballet Pacifica’s corps de ballet performing annually Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Four Seasons and La Sylphide among other works.

Transitioning from dancing to teaching, Aubrey began her own school of classical ballet in California that she directed for 12 years. The school was based on the Cecchetti Method with students entering exams annually. The Youth Company, in residence, performed full length performances of The Nutcracker with guest artist’s formerly of the Bolshoi, Prague National Ballet and Texas Ballet. Students received full scholarships to ABT, The Rock School and Boston Ballet.

With sincere gratitude to Sheila Kennedy, Aubrey earned her Associate with the Cecchetti Society of Canada. Ms. Walker’s additional teacher’s studies include The Kirov Choreographic Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, ABT , Ballet Arts and Cecchetti USA.

Movement
Carine Young - Yoga
Carine’s B.A. in Criminology, studies in acupuncture and interests in different arts are reflected in her classes. Skilled in sharing her knowledge of biomechanics in a tangible way, students are invited to discover their own forms in a safe environment. Her journey began in 1998 with a paperback version of The Sivananda Companion to Yoga. Since then, this book, in combination with great teachers, has become a wonderful guide in revealing yoga’s magic. Children and their open-mindedness, determination and fun-seeking nature drive her own teachings. Carine has been a guest teacher at the Semperviva 95-hour kids teacher training where she shared her innovative ideas and skills with future teachers. She believes that yoga has infinite positive effects in our society today: developing respect and kindness for each other, our precious environment and ourselves. Carine leads various yoga workshops, and incorporates different energy modalities in her work. Carine is a Reiki master and Canadian Yoga Alliance registered experienced teacher CYA-E-RYT 350, with additional training in restorative, yin, prenatal, kids and hot yogas.

Drama
Jill Raymond - Musical Theatre, Drama
Jill Raymond is a British-Canadian multi-talented international performance artist with over a decade of professional experience. Her training includes a First Honours Degree in Acting, as well as extensive vocal/singing and dance courses. Her professional career has seen her performing on stages on three continents. Jill has worked with children and young adults most of her life. Currently entering her fourth year at the Richmond Arts Centre, Jill also teaches independently and at a number of other organizations in Metro Vancouver. She is passionate in crafting and developing talent and creativity in aspiring artists and future generations through theatre, music and dance.

Music
Julia Walmsley – Singing and Music
Julia moved to Vancouver three years ago after completing her Bachelor of Music in Voice at Carleton University in Ottawa. She has since completed her Bachelor of Music Therapy and has recently also become part of the Registered Music Teachers Association of BC as a voice instructor. Julia loves to perform and can often be seen around Metro Vancouver as a solo act performing her original children's music repertoire or in a local musical or play. At the Richmond Arts Centre, Julia teaches group music lessons for children and youth. She enjoys bringing the love of music to so many students and always strives to have them leave with a tune in their head.

Aouda Yen – Piano

Pianist and flutist Aouda Yen holds a Bachelor degree in Performing Arts (Music) from Capilano University, a Diploma of Performing Arts (Music) from Douglas College and a Bachelor degree in Business Administration (Entrepreneurship Leadership) from Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Most recently, she composed original music for piano and performed piano and flute for the Shadow Play at the Push International Festival. In addition to her performing career, Aouda is an inspiring educator who enjoys teaching piano and flute to young children. Many of her students have been awarded Gold Medals in music festivals and First Class Honours with Distinction in piano exams. Recently, one of Aouda’s students was awarded the Gold Medal in Grade 7 Piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music for the highest exam mark achieved in British Columbia in 2012.

Stephanie Lui – Piano
Stephanie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music and has been teaching the piano for nine years. She is a creative and dynamic music teacher and believes that there are different kinds of musical talents hidden in every child. As a teacher, her role is to discover the talents in her students and nurture them. She also believes that building positive relationships with her students enhances the learning process and strengthens the confidence in her students’ playing.

Tyler Dumoulin – Piano, Guitar

Tyler Dumoulin is a music educator, composer, and multi-instrumentalist living in Richmond with his actor wife and drama queen cat. He has a passion for helping children discover a love for music through interactive lessons that focus on a combination of technique and song-based teaching with the goal of helping the student to create their own musical ideas for self-expression.

Visual Arts
Tony Bowden – Visual Arts
Tony, or Mr. Tony, received his Masters in Art at Case Western University with a concentration in Art Education. He also received a scholarship to the Cleveland Institute of Art where he later joined the faculty. He started working in animation on The Care Bear Movie and later apprenticed for an architecture firm. His curiosity and passion for using art to better the world led him to create and direct Image Eccentric, which dealt with visual multi-media shows as benefits for charities such as ArtCares, a charity organization in which he is the creator and founder of. 

Mr. Tony is a practicing artist who has been published, photographed and exhibited at showcases like Museum of Modern Art in Cleveland. He also teamed with Mark Brown, creator of the popular children’s cartoon series Arthur to do a limited edition print. He is also dedicated to promoting the arts around BC and was featured twice in Over The Edge by the Canadian Federation of Painters. Mr. Tony is also a member of BCTC (British Columbia Teachers College).

Sean Karemaker - Visual Arts
Sean Karemaker is a Vancouver-based visual artist. After a childhood obsession with reading and writing comics, he obtained a diploma in graphic design from Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo (2002) and began a career in 3D design for video games while also doing freelance work in graphic design and illustration. Personal narrative is a common element in his body of work, which encompasses diorama sculptures, comics, scrolls and paintings. Sean's work has been exhibited at local art galleries including the Gam, the Gropps, Seymour, Pendulum and Ayden.
