Richmond receives $5,000 Infrastructure Grant for upgraded recycling depot

26 April 2021

The City of Richmond is once again the recipient of a $5,000 Infrastructure Grant awarded by Western Coast Insurance Services, this time for the recently completed improvements to the Richmond recycling depot.

“Our goal in upgrading Richmond’s recycling depot is to improve user experience and broaden its scope of services,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The foundation’s community infrastructure grant aided in these upgrades, aimed to promote greater recycling as well as support the City’s established waste diversion targets and Council’s commitment to the environment.”

“As a team at Western Coast Insurance Services in Richmond, we are so happy to give back to the City of Richmond through our Western Financial Group Communities Foundation,” said Ophelia Ku, Cambie Branch Manager. “Upgrading the recycling depot has a significant impact on our local community and the environment as a whole. We are pleased to be a part of this effort to improve the recycling depot for our community to encourage more recycling in the City of Richmond.”

The recycling depot upgrades, which cost $1.58 million, include the updating of aging infrastructure and improving operations—more specifically, providing a larger site, expanding the number of hazardous waste materials collected, tent coverings and new steel awnings to shield recyclers and staff from the weather, the building of a classroom for future environmental educational programs, and the purchase of new heavy equipment for moving the recycled materials.

This is the third consecutive year the City has received the Western Financial Group Communities Foundation Infrastructure Grant. In 2019, the City received $5,000 towards an innovative bike storage system at Minoru Centre for Active Living and in 2018 the funds went towards the new Brighouse Fire Hall No. 1.
