Conservation grant presented to group in Steveston

14 July 2021

The City of Richmond has presented a Steveston Village Heritage Conservation Grant in the amount of $150,000 to the Richmond Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary.

The grant, which was approved by Council in May 2019, helped fund the replacement of the structural foundation at the former Steveston Methodist Church (3711 and 3731 Chatham Street), a protected heritage building which the Richmond Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary currently operate as a non-profit thrift shop.

The Steveston Village Heritage Conservation Grant program was established in 2009 to provide financial assistance to property owners for conserving the exterior of 17 protected heritage buildings in the Steveston Village Heritage Conservation Area. Funding for the grant program is provided by density bonus contributions associated with new development in Steveston Village, as set out in the Steveston Area Plan.

The maximum funding amount per identified heritage building is $150,000, based on 50 per cent of the total eligible expenses and matching private funding. An additional grant of $100,000 maximum per building, with matching private funding, may be approved by City Council if the work being done is considered exceptional heritage conservation, based on its overall contribution to preserving the character of Steveston Village.
