Putting Litter in its Place

Litter is unpleasant to look at, it takes a long time to decay, and some litter contains toxic materials that are absorbed into the environment.  An aluminium can takes between 200 and 500 years to break down.  A plastic six-pack holder takes up to 450 years! Many such items can be recycled through the City's recycling programs.

The City picks up litter from parks and roadsides, but we need your help to keep Richmond beautiful. Here are some ways you can prevent litter:

  • Keep trash containers securely covered at home and at work.  Animals are attracted to food waste.
  • Don't put loose garbage into trash cans.  Secure your garbage inside plastic bags so it doesn't blow around when the collector empties your can.
  • Don't put garbage cans, bags or yard trimmings out until the night before, or the morning of pick-up.
  • Clean up litter around your home or business.
  • Leave parks and recreation areas clean for others to enjoy.
  • Lead by example. Use only designated containers for depositing litter.
  • Return all beverage containers for a deposit refund.
