City Prepares for Winter Storms

9 December 2009

The winter of 2008/09 is one that caused many people to rethink their winter weather readiness. One of the many lessons learned by residents was to prepare for snow before it hits. The City of Richmond’s Public Works crews have already begun preparations for the winter season and are asking the public to do the same.

“While we don’t know when the first snowfall of the season will happen, we are proceeding on the forecast that there is a high probability as clouds form there will be snow falling before the temperature rises above freezing,” explains Dan Mooney, Manager of Roads and Construction. “With weather forecasters predicting snow may start falling as early as late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, road crews are busy preparing city streets.”

Road crews have been applying liquid brine and salt to ‘pre-treat’ the major arterial roadways, as per the City’s Snow Response Plan. With all of the equipment prepared, crews trained, and salt stock piled, the City is ready for the first snow fall and asks residents to prepare themselves for the upcoming winter season.

“Good winter tires, a full tank of gas and window washer fluid, an ice scraper, and pre-trip planning are a good start,” says Mooney. “Keeping your sidewalk clear of snow and helping your neighbours who may need assistance are other ways you can help the community this winter.”
