Sustainable Transportation

The City supports a number of programs, both within the organization and in the community that aim to minimize the environmental and economic impacts of excessive traffic. In the past few years, a number of City initiatives have been undertaken to encourage alternate modes of transportation to reduce the use of single occupant vehicles (SOV).

Walking

To encourage people to walk, the City has developed various ongoing programs to improve our environment and make walking more accessible. These include:

  • wider sidewalks and crosswalks;
  • non-vehicular walkways;
  • shorter city blocks with signalized crosswalks; and
  • wheelchair ramps and accessible pedestrian signals.

Transit
Richmond Transit Service
The first Richmond Area Transit Plan, developed jointly by TransLink and the City in 2001 initiated new and upgraded local bus services. Improvements implemented to date include:

  • the high frequency/high capacity #98 B-Line service between Richmond City Centre and downtown Vancouver;
  • more frequent bus service, extended service hours and combining routes to reduce transfers for cross-town connections;
  • expanded all-day services to east Richmond; and,
  • improved service to YVR airport and UBC, and direct services between west Richmond and downtown Vancouver.

The Plan will be updated in 2009 to incorporate the opening of the Canada Line.

Canada Line
The Canada Line rapid transit system will carry people between Richmond, Vancouver International Airport (YVR), and Vancouver's Waterfront Centre in 25 minutes or less.
