Pollution Prevention & Response

Pollution poses a threat to human health and the environment. Pollution wastes precious resources and can result in economic losses, including reduced property values and increased development costs.

Combating pollution is a shared responsibility among governments, businesses, institutions, and individuals. The City of Richmond takes part in addressing pollution by:

  • adhering to an environmental purchasing policy by purchasing goods and services that are less toxic, generate less pollution, and result in less waste;
  • enforcing the City's Pollution Prevention & Response Bylaw, which prohibits the discharge of harmful substances to Richmond's soils and watercourses;
  • responding to spills in partnership with other agencies;
  • providing recycling and garbage collection services to help dispose of or re-use unwanted household material; and
  • providing information on preventative measures and suggestions for creating a cleaner environment.
