Air Crash

Richmond is the host of a busy international airport.  Being prepared for the possibility of an air crash in Richmond is a necessity.  Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is located within the City of Richmond, on Sea Island.  Protecting the health and safety of passengers, customers and employees is a priority for Vancouver International Airport Authority.  YVR's commitment to excellence in airport safety and security is reflected in a comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.

YVR is the second largest international passenger gateway on the West Coast of North America, playing an important role in both the local and global community. The airport is home to a variety of businesses, and is the workplace of some 26,000 employees. In an emergency situation—such as an aircraft incident, natural disaster, medical emergency, security threat or biological hazard—trained emergency response personnel are ready to respond.  Airlines, passengers, tenants and employees rely on the Airport Authority to have continuity plans in place so operations at YVR may return to normal as quickly as possible.

The Emergency Management Plan is a system for managing emergencies and irregular operations at YVR. It centres around three basic principles: Prevent, Prepare and Practice.  As part of these principles, the management plan incorporates a comprehensive training program including monthly tabletops, simulation drills and  live scenario exercises for emergency response personnel and agencies. These exercises give responders an opportunity to apply and enhance their skills, ensuring an efficient, effective and coordinated response to an emergency situation.

The Airport Authority's Emergency Management Plan is assessed and refined on an ongoing basis to incorporate knowledge gained through real-life and simulated emergencies, and the latest developments in airport safety and emergency management. The plan has one goal: to protect the health and safety of airport passengers, customers and employees by ensuring emergency preparedness remains integral to the operating philosophy at YVR.
