Protecting Your Own Belongings
  • Never leave handbags on desks or wallets in coat pockets in your absence. Take them with you.
  • Never leave your purse or wallet tucked behind the counter where you work.
  • If a locker is provided for you at your workplace, use it. And lock it. Keep the key or combination on your person or in a secure place.

Your Employer's Property
Always keep money in a safe place. Don't leave even the petty cash in an unlocked drawer during the day. And at night put it in the safe or remove it from the building altogether.

Wherever you work, there is likely something that should be kept under lock and key:

  • the restricted drug cabinet
  • the jewelry display counter
  • desk drawers where there are valuables
  • the file cabinet that contains confidential papers. If they are "for your eyes only", keep it that way.
  • the company car.
  • Keep the keys in a safe place, not in unlocked desk drawers.
  • Lock the windows in your absence.

Your Visitors

  • Never assume that a stranger wandering in the building is a member of the staff. Even "Can I help you?" can discourage the dishonest without interfering with the legitimate visitor.
  • Never allow anyone to remove equipment without checking with your supervisor first.
  • Don't disclose confidential information to a stranger.
