Help Name Our Boat Contest

Richmond’s patrol boat is a 7.3 meter rigid hull inflatable zodiac which was donated to the detachment by the Steveston Office of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Last year’s acquisition of the patrol boat now enables the Richmond RCMP to patrol the north and south arms of the Fraser River, as well as the coastal regions surrounding the community. “Over 30 patrols were conducted last summer in the waters surrounding Richmond” stated Cpl. Sherrdean Turley, Media Relations Officer for Richmond RCMP. “Our boat was also present at a number of special events throughout the year such as Ships to Shore, Celebration of Lights, Steveston Maritime Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival.” Richmond RCMP has now partnered with the Richmond School Board to get local youth involved by helping to name the new boat. Cst. Veronica Fox of Richmond’s Youth Section explains “the goal is for us to partner with Richmond’s youth and engage them in participating in something police related and fun.”
Elementary school students have been encouraged to enter the “Help Name Our Boat” contest in two categories. Students can either submit a written essay outlining how they think the patrol boat will assist the Richmond RCMP serve their community, or they can produce a piece of visual art representative of how the vessel will be utilized by officers.
The contest opens March 1st 2012 and submissions will be collected through Richmond Elementary Schools and the Richmond RCMP Detachment. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place entries in both categories. First place winners will win a pizza party for their class. In addition, a student’s suggested patrol boat name, art or essay may be used for a display or other RCMP projects.
All youth enrolled in grades five through seven in Richmond are invited to participate in this contest. Entries can be submitted through Richmond public schools or the Richmond RCMP Detachment located at 11411 No 5 Road. Entries will be collected from 8 a.m. March 1st until 5 p.m. March 30th. Contest winners will be notified at their respective school.

Contest Rules
1. HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
The sponsor of this Contest is the Richmond RCMP Detachment.
1.1 Eligibility: The "Help Name Our Boat" contest (the “Contest”) is open to all Grade 5, 6 and 7 students of the School District No. 38 (Richmond). This includes students of Public Elementary Schools, Private Schools and Home Schools in the district.
1.2 Contest Period: The Contest starts at 8:00 a.m., Pacific Standard Time, March 1, 2012 and ends at 5:00 p.m., Pacific Daylight Time, March 30, 2012. All entries must be received at either the entrant's school office or the Richmond RCMP Detachment Front Counter (11411 No 5 Road, Richmond BC) by the Contest close.
1.3 Contest Entry: Students may participate in the Contest by either writing an essay or producing a piece of visual art.
1.3.1 Written Essay Requirements: The written essay may be either typed or hand written/printed. The written essay may be of no more than 250 words. The written essay must cover the topic of what you would name the new Richmond RCMP Detachment Patrol Boat and how you think the patrol boat will help the Richmond RCMP work in your community.
1.3.2 Visual Art Requirements: The visual art may be a drawing or painting on a single piece of letter sized paper (8.5 x 11) including what you would name the new Richmond RCMP Detachment Patrol Boat and a visual representation of the patrol boat.
1.4 Contest Entry Restrictions: Students are restricted to two (2) entries (via Written Essay or Visual Art) per person, per household. All entries must include the entering student's first and last names, grade and school name in order to be valid. Home School students must also include contact information such as phone number or email address. Entries indicating the same name and school name will be considered, for purposes of the Contest, to belong to the same student and therefore are subject to the above restriction. Any excess entries will be invalid for the purposes of the Contest.
1.5 Awarding of Prize: The Prize will be awarded to the student whose contact information (first and last names, grade and school name) has been indicated on the entered written essay or visual art.
2. PRIZE
2.1 Prize: The Contest is divided in two (2) categories as indicated below. There will be one (1) first place prize awarded for each category, one (1) second place prize awarded for each category and one (1) third place prize awarded for each category. The total number of prizes awarded during the Contest will be six (6). Each Prize must be accepted as awarded. No cash alternatives, substitution or transfers of the awarded Prize will be allowed.
2.1.1 Written Essay Prizes:
1st Place Written Essay: Pizza Party for winning student’s class including the presentation of a prize (to be determined) to the individual winning student.
Excerpts of winning student's written essay may appear on Richmond RCMP Detachment Boat Team COP CARD and/or other media published by the RCMP.
2nd Place Written Essay: Presentation of a prize (to be determined) to the individual winning student.
3rd Place Written Essay: Presentation of a prize (to be determined) to the individual winning student.
2.1.2 Visual Art Prizes:
1st Place Visual Art: Pizza Party for winning student’s class including the presentation of a prize (to be determined) to the individual winning student.
Some or all of the student's visual art may appear on Richmond RCMP Detachment Boat Team COP CARD and/or other media published by the RCMP.
2nd Place Visual Art: Presentation of a prize (to be determined) to the individual winning student.
3rd Place Visual Art: Presentation of a prize (to be determined) to the individual winning student.
2.2 Odds: The odds of winning a Prize depends upon the total number of eligible entries received during the Contest Period.
2.3 Prize Awarding: The Prizes (six (6) in total) will be awarded to winning students selected out of all eligible Contest entries received during the applicable Contest Period. Members of the Richmond RCMP Boat Team will select ten (10) entries in each category (total of twenty (20) entries in total) as short listed winners. From this shortlist, the Officer in Charge (or designate) of the Richmond RCMP Detachment will then select the first, second and third place winners in each category (total of six (6) winning students).
2.4 Notification of Selection: The winning students will be contacted through their school or, for Home School students, via the contact information provided by the contestant within sixty (60) days of the Contest close date.
3. GENERAL RULES
3.1 Each Prize claim is subject to verification by the Richmond RCMP Detachment. The Richmond RCMP Detachment will be the sole and final reference source in validating a Prize claim.
3.2 Prizes are awarded for the written essay and/or visual art. Winning the Contest in either of these categories does not necessarily mean the suggested boat name may be selected by the Richmond RCMP Detachment.
3.3 All entries are voluntary. By participating, each entrant and selected winner agrees and hereby grants the Richmond RCMP Detachment permission to use, copy, modify, distribute, and publicly display Contest submissions for any purpose, such as, but not limited to, press and media communications, without any compensation or attribution to the entrant and/or winner. Contest entrants also agree that the Richmond RCMP Detachment may give others these same rights, all without payment of any compensation to the contest entrants. The winners also agree to participate in any media or promotional activity regarding the Contest.
3.4 By registering for the Contest and/or submitting an entry, all Entrants agree that all components of proposed boat names, written essays and visual art along with any supporting statements are original creations. Any intellectual property infringement, misuse or plagiarism of another’s work in any form or state will result in immediate disqualification and forfeiture of eligibility to receive all awards, recognition and prizes. All intellectual property and industrial property rights in any entries that belonged to the Entrants will remain with the Entrants, but the submissions will otherwise become the property of the Richmond RCMP Detachment, and will not be returned after the Contest. Winners grant the Richmond RCMP Detachment permission to use, copy, modify, distribute, and publicly display their Contest submissions for any purpose without any attribution or compensation to the Winners.
3.5 By entering the Contest, Entrants agree to comply with and be bound by the Rules. Failure to comply with these Rules may result in disqualification from the Contest.
