![]() |
Home invasions are scary. The crime itself threatens our belief that we are safest in our homes. This information can help you improve the safety of your home and neighbourhood. If you need more information, call 604-207-4790.
Prevention Tips
- Make your home appear as though many people live in it. Put out toys and work boots in the yard.
- Change your routine. Don't be predictable.
- Keep a cordless phone handy when at home in case you need help or see something suspicious.
- Get a dog. Or leave a dog dish outside your door and place a BEWARE of DOG sign in the yard.
- Consider getting an alarm system. Make sure it works properly, and teach everyone in your home how to set it and cancel it properly.
- Never give personal information over the phone to strangers.
- Never let a stranger on the telephone know when you will be home or out.
- Always check to see who's there before you answer the door.
- Always respond so the person knows someone is home.
- Don't open the door to anyone you do not know. Remember, you don't have to open the door to anyone.
- If you are expecting a repair or service technician ask for their identification before you let them in.
- Pretend there are other people in the house by calling out someone's name. Keep your radio or television on.
- Get to know your neighbours so you will be able to spot suspicious persons, vehicles or activities.
- Join Block Watch.
- Keep a pen and notebook handy in case you need to write details out, even when you are out walking.
- Don't be afraid to call 911 if you see a crime in progress.
- If you see any suspicious persons, activities or vehicles in your area, call 9-1-1. Describe what you've seen and explain why you are concerned.
- Give all the information requested of you by the 9-1-1 Operator.
- Stay calm and remain on the line until you are told to hang up.
- When you call 9-1-1, your address and phone number are displayed on the 9-1-1 Operator's screen, (unless you are using a cell phone) so if you are unable or afraid to speak, a police unit will respond to find out why.
- Stay CALM
- CO-OPERATE. No amount of cash or property is worth getting hurt over.
- DON'T fight back.
- LOOK carefully at the intruders, even if they are masked. Is there something unique about them such as scars, tattoos, or do they large nose? What are they wearing?
- Listen to everything they say, and how they say it.
