Leaving the Home

Even outside your own home, there are things you can do to keep your children safe when you go out...

Yard Safety
  • Infants under six months old should be kept out of the sun. Older babies should be covered up to prevent against sunburn. For toddlers, always use maximum protection sunscreen.
  • Check with the Poison Information Centre to see which plants are toxic and should not be planted in the yard.
  • Always supervise children in a wading pool and turn it over after use.
  • Swimming pools should be fenced off on all sides with a gate that locks.
  • Keep children away from a barbecue in use.
  • Make sure playground equipment is well maintained and correctly anchored.
  • Have your children wear shoes outside to protect their feet from cuts.
  • Teach your children not to play in the driveway or near the street.
  • Always use a properly installed car seat every time you go out in a car, even if it is just a few blocks.
  • Don't leave a baby alone in a shopping cart, even for a second.
Teaching Children to Call For Help
  • Teach your child his or her full name, address and telephone number, as well as your name.
  • Using a toy telephone, have your child practice making an emergency call.
  • Teach your child how to explain and describe an emergency call.
  • Keep a list of emergency numbers in a prominent spot at child's eye level and make sure your children, babysitter and neighbours know where it is.
