Roving Youth Outreach Leader Service
The City’s Youth Recreation Services works to develop capacities that can effectively address a range of recreational, social and cultural needs of youth.
Our work is based on the asset-building framework that is geared towards developing the potential in all youth. Based on this premise, two roving outreach leaders are available to connect with youth in the community. This service focus involves the establishment of positive relationships with unaffiliated youth 13-18 years of age and the subsequent bridging of recreational and cultural activities and/or appropriate services.
In a mentoring capacity, the Roving Leaders design and engage youth in activities that interest and meet individual needs. Activities are a useful vehicle to providing real opportunities for learning and personal growth.
Referrals
Any Richmond organization or agency can refer youth to the Roving Leader service. Referees are asked to complete a referral form (available below) prior to arranging a meeting with a roving leader and the youth. Referrals can be faxed to
604-276-4132. Services are contingent upon worker caseloads.
Service Goals:
- Increase youth’s inventory of free-time experiences
- Increase youth’s perceptions that they are involved in experiences that are safe and meaningful
- Increase youth’s awareness of resources to help deal with difficult circumstances
- Increase motivation to stay in school/attend regularly
- Improve youth’s ability to make smart choices in relation to risky behaviours
- Increase youth’s trust and respect for themselves and others
- Increase youth’s citizenship, leadership and/or job skills
