Terra Nova Rural Park

Location
This park is located in the area known as Terra Nova North West Quadrant west of Number 1 Road and between River Road and Westminster Highway. For a site context map, please see Terra Nova Rural Park .

The Concept Plan
On September 13th, 2004 Council approved the Concept Plan for the area called Terra Nova North West Quadrant.  The Vision adopted for this unique 63 acre City owned park is :
"To preserve the unique rural landscape character of Terra Nova North West Quadrant Park while providing a balance between heritage, wildlife conservation, and recreational uses.”

Some of the features included in the plan are a Heritage District with the 5 heritage houses and homesteads, creative interpretive features and public art, field lookout structure,  farm centre with community gardens, old-field habitats, hedgerows, a daylighted slough, trails and boardwalks, and a waterfront lookout structure.  For more information please see Terra Nova Rural Park.

Terra Nova Rural Park
Terra Nova Rural Park was awarded a CPRA Innovative Award of Excellence for the community consultation process in overall development of the park. In 2007 the following work was completed:

  • To prevent any further deterioration, the Parson 1890's heritage house was raised, a concrete foundation construction, and a new wood roof added
  • Construction of the intertidal slough & "crabapple ridge" (interior waterway)
  • Trail Construction including bridges
  • Educational programs were offered in the Demonstration Garden area
  • 1.5 acres of land for the Sharing Farm was prepared for planting in 2007
  • Oats were planted in the Environmental Art Field to test the quality of growth in preparation of a community field art project
  • Design work was completed for the Demonstration Garden Kitchen/public washroom building and the intertidal slough
  • Terra Nova schoolyard garden expanded

In 2008, the following projects will be undertaken:

  • Raising one of the historic Cannery buildings to prevent further deterioration
  • Planting and harvesting of the Sharing Farm 1.5 acres land
  • Retrofit of the "barn" with a classroom, community kitchen and public washrooms
  • Native planing of the slough area
  • Restoration of heritage orchard and vegetable garden at Parson House
  • Construction of the slough floodgates
