Parks Planning and Construction
Park Planning and Capital Projects are defined as significant construction projects on new or expanding parks.
Garden City Park
This twenty-three acre park is located within the McLennan North area of Richmond, and is bounded by Garden City Road to the west, Alberta Road to the north, Anderson School to the east, and Granville Avenue to the south.
The major project for 2011 will focus on construction of the Alberta Road Greenway, that portion of Alberta Road between Garden City Road and Katsura Road that has now been closed. The roadway will be redeveloped for pedestrian and cyclist use, and will become a key part of the City’s trails and greenways network. The design will reflect the naturalized setting of Garden City Park, and will feature asphalt pathways, pedestrian scale lighting, public art, seating, tree planting and landscaping.
Middle Arm Waterfront Greenway
The Middle Arm Waterfront Greenway is, after the Oval, the next piece of Richmond’s envisioned premier urban riverfront and is the first phase of implementation of the Middle Arm Open Space Master Plan Concept. The project includes improved flood protection on the Middle Arm dike, a paved greenway trail with two plazas and an amphitheatre which accommodate both everyday use and special events such as rowing regattas and dragon boat races. In addition, three inclusive play spaces are located along the greenway providing interactive and fun river-oritented experiences for children of all abilities. In 2011, the final touches on the Greenway will be completed.
The City of Richmond augmented its own funding for the project through Western Economic Diversification, Flood Protection Management BC, the Province of British Columbia’s LocalMotion program and from 2010 Legacies Now in partnership with the Province of British Columbia, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Rick Hansen Man In Motion Foundation.
