How the River Road Community Garden Grew
May 1998 Richmond Environmental Youth Corps (EYS) proposes Community Garden Project to the City of Richmond Parks Department
June 1998 City of Richmond launches Partners for Beautification Program
July 1998 Richmond EYC, in partnership with Parks staff, research community gardens and prepare a possible list of sites and a report to Richmond City Council
September 1998 Richmond City Council approved Richmond Community Garden project at 6080 River Road
January to March 1999 EYC and Parks Department solicit sponsorship for the Community Garden with $20,000 donated
March 1999 Community Garden Resident Council and Parks Division staff tour Strathcona/Cottonwood Community Gardens in Vancouver for ideas and inspiration

Youth receives City of Richmond Art Grant for Community Garden "Picket Fence" project

March 20, 1999 Final design complete and construction begins with the assistance of City crews and youth and volunteers all building the site together

The 1999 Community Garden Project began as a three-year initiative. The site will be relocated from it's present location on River Road to its permanent home at Terra Nova Rural Park in early 2005.
