Help Richmond Sunset Rotary Club’s Winter Wonderland Aid the Global Community

08 October 2009

This winter, you can help the Richmond Sunset Rotary Club extend its aid to the global community by supporting the 9th Winter Wonderland at Richmond City Hall.

There are many ways to contribute – from sponsoring a Christmas tree now, making a donation anytime, coming out to vote for your favourite tree or enjoying one of the free musical concerts.

“This event is a fantastic opportunity to spend Christmas dollars in a meaningful way,” says Jackie Lee, President, Richmond Sunset Rotary Club. “Your donation will help those less fortunate.”

The Richmond Sunset Rotary Club is looking for community organizations, businesses and individuals to sponsor a Winter Wonderland tree or make a donation. Sponsors will have an opportunity to showcase their organization at a high-profile venue. The display should be decorated in a winter holiday theme and can advertise the sponsor’s products, services and company logo.

“In the spirit of Richmond welcoming the world to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, an international event which showcases the achievements of mankind,” announced Magdalen Leung, Chair of Richmond Sunset Rotary Club’s 9th Annual Winter Wonderland event, “we’ve made the choice this year to focus our fundraising efforts on a very special project reaching out to the global community,”

The Richmond Sunset Rotary Club has chosen to support Refilwe, a South African community located on 18 hectares of land just north of Johannesburg. This community is home to some of the most severely disadvantaged people on earth. People live in small, scattered and rundown settlements – Tuberculosis, Malaria, AIDS and HIV, unemployment, limited education, lack of skills and poor housing are just some of the challenges that the local residents face. A great number of them do not have access to clean water, electricity or basic social services.

“Having been to Refilwe for the past three years to help educate and care for their children,” Leung explains,  “I personally know the extraordinary difference our fundraising will make in the lives of hundreds, if not thousands. Our goal is to raise enough funds to complete the greatly needed community kitchen.

This year’s Winter Wonderland theme is the Sights and Sounds of the Holiday. Thirty brand new artificial trees will be offered for sponsorship and decoration by local businesses and community organizations on display from November 21 to December 31.

Full tree sponsorships and co-sponsorships are available. Or in lieu of a tree, donations can be made.

At this time the 9th Annual Winter Wonderland is sponsored by ASPAC Developments as the Event Sponsor, the Vancouver International Airport Authority as a Gold Sponsor and Concord Pacific as a Silver Sponsor. Media sponsors are The Richmond Review and CHMB AM1320. The City of Richmond is a supporting partner.
