Vancouver Biennale Sculpture to Mark Entrance to Middle Arm Greenway
3 February 2010
Trail users and visitors to Richmond arriving at the Aberdeen Canada Line station and walking to the Richmond Olympic Oval will have a new temporary sculptural beacon to welcome them to the start of the Middle Arm Greenway. As part of the 2009-2011 Vancouver Biennale, Chinese sculptor Jun Ren continues his North American debut with an elegant, amorphic stainless steel sculpture titled Water #10.
Water #10 is located adjacent to the new Cambie Pumping Station and Cambie park plaza. The park plaza is cantilevered over the Fraser River Middle Arm and offers spectacular views of the river systems, mountains and YVR.
The sculpture draws inspiration from pure forms, water or liquid mercury stopped in motion to reveal its shape as a drop or spill caught in the air. With no angles, or hard edges, the art work flows visually and appears light and fluid.
Jun Ren has become a successful and respected sculptor of monumental and historical sculpture with works spanning cities from the south to the north of China, including locations in many emerging industrial cities.
The Jun Ren art work is just one of up to nine sculptures residents and visitors will see throughout Richmond during the Vancouver Biennale which runs through to 2011. For more information about Vancouver Biennale visit www.vancouverbiennale.com or call 604-682-1289.
