Study Circles Launched in Richmond
26 August 2010
Participate - Make the City yours
Participants are wanted for an exciting and innovative project the City of Richmond is launching in partnership with Richmond Civic Engagement Network. Volunteers from all sections of the community are invited to engage in ‘Study Circles’ on the topic of the Richmond Social Planning Strategy. This will help decide what social programs and services the City should be supporting over the next 10 years (e.g. childcare, support for immigrants, social housing).
“Study Circles have been used in many societies for people to express their viewpoints in a non-threatening manner,” explains Alan Hill, Cultural Diversity Coordinator. “Your participation in the circles is a good example, and experience, of democracy and active citizenship.”
As a community member, residents have opinions about many things that affect their daily life, including policies made by your local government. Study Circles provide the opportunity to learn about government policies and give feedback in a respectful, confidential and inclusive way. These circles are small discussion groups guided by neutral facilitators, who are also community members – government officials will not be present.
The following study circles will run at Richmond City Hall for three weeks from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
- Circle One: September 13, 20 and 27 in Mandarin
- Circle Two: September 14, 21 and 28 in English for immigrants
- Circle Three: September 15, 22 and 29 in Cantonese
- Circle Four: September 16, 23 and 30 in English, open to general public
Study Circles will be held in a choice of Mandarin, Cantonese and English. To book a spot or for more information please contact Alan Hill at 604-276-4391, email Alan.Hill@richmond.ca.
