Jim Gallacher to MC Steveston’s Robbie Burns Supper January 26

17 January 2012

Laddies and lassies, dress up in your best kilts and join other older adults at the Steveston Community Centre on January 26, to celebrate the birth of Scotland's favourite son with a dinner featuring authentic Scottish food, entertainment and dancing.

Steveston’s supper will be hosted by Master of Ceremonies Jim Gallacher, a well-known Scottish-born local personality who is well versed in the traditions of Robert Burns celebrations. The evening promises to deliver authenticity and humour. It will be held at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, north of the Steveston Community Centre parking lot, starting at 5:30 p.m. The ticket price of $50 includes a roast beef dinner with haggis – a true tradition, and entertainment featuring traditional speeches, bagpipes and Scottish country dancing.

“This promises to be a great night, since it’s been many years since a Burns Supper has been hosted in Steveston,” said Steveston Community Society’s Older Adults Coordinator, Margie Hardy. “Folks should come prepared to eat well, drink well and laugh often at this event.”

Widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, Robert Burns is best known for the poem and song Auld Lang Syne. Burns Suppers are held around the world, typically on or near the date of the poet’s birthday, January 25.

Registration for this event is open to adults 55 years and older and can be done through the Registration Call Centre at 604-276-4300 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by contacting the Steveston Community Centre by phone or in person (Course code 198604).
