Cauldron and City Set Alight by Richmond’s Man in Motion

11 February 2010

Richmond’s own Rick Hansen kicked the city’s Olympic spirit into high gear in the midst of massive celebrations at the O Zone in Minoru Park at 8 p.m. on February 9. More than 50,000 people followed the torch’s progress through the city, and 25,000 packed the celebration site to witness the Man in Motion light the cauldron.

The torch itself arrived in Richmond in the late afternoon via No. 5 Road, and was carried by more than 70 different torch bearers throughout the city before making its way into the O Zone with Rick.

After being invited to bear the torch on the last leg of its journey through his hometown, Rick said that it “brings (him) great pride to not only join in our community in this once-in-a-lifetime celebration, but to also participate as a Canadian in the historic journey of the Olympic flame.”

The celebration featured great performances artists from around the community, including Delhi 2 Dublin, Shanna Lynn, Danielle Hebert, Freshh and the Richmond Orchestra and Chorus Association.

Stilt walkers, magicians, and jugglers were on hand to entertain the crowd, but without a doubt, the evening’s highlight was the moment the Man in Motion set the Olympic flame to the cauldron, and set Richmond’s Olympic spirit on fire.
