Reptile Show at Richmond Nature Park

16 March 2010

What do reptiles the world over have in common? The answer – an image problem! Learn more about the world of reptiles at the Richmond Nature Park’s Exotic Reptile Show on March 20 and 21, 2010.

During this educational show, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, handlers will share their knowledge of reptile biology, behaviour and care. This is an excellent opportunity for a close look at animals that are usually only seen by North American audiences on nature documentary television shows.

Reptiles, whether they are snakes, lizards or turtles, are often perceived as slimy, slithering things to be avoided. The truth is quite different. Reptiles are fascinating creatures exquisitely suited to their environments. They have existed for millennia and have adapted to conditions ranging from desert to ocean and forest to ponds. Some reptiles are delicate and graceful while others are armour-plated bulldozers. Most live close to the ground but a few can fly. Some have legs, others don’t. The majority lay eggs but a few bear their young alive.

So exquisitely tuned to their world, reptiles are unable to survive rapid changes to their environment. Where healthy viable populations exist, we know the environment is intact. Their absence indicates that something is amiss with the environment. These ancient creatures have become modern indicators of an environmental health crisis.

The Westcoast Society for the Protection and Conservation of Reptiles will host the show at the Richmond Nature Park’s Nature House. The Nature Park is located at 11851 Westminster Hwy, on the north side, just west of No. 5 Road.

Admission to the reptile show is by donation. All ages are welcome to attend. For more information please call the Richmond Nature Park at 604-718-6188.
