City Celebrates National Public Works Week

12 May 2009

They are often the unsung heroes of a municipality, but the public works employees—staff who maintain the community’s facilities, roads, water and wastewater systems, and the staff who support them—are key to the City’s ability to consistently deliver the high quality of service for which Richmond is known.

National Public Works Week, which recognizes the tens of thousands of men and women in North America who have dedicated their careers to public works, is May 17 to 23, 2009 and to celebrate, the City will once again hold an open house:
Date: Saturday, May 23, 2009
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Location: City Operations Yard, 5599 Lynas Lane
Admission: Free
The festive, family fun day features live music; hands-on demonstrations of excavators, dump trucks, remote control equipment and other heavy machinery; gardening and lawn care demonstrations; displays on major projects; demonstrations of high-tech emergency equipment; and interactive environmental exhibits.

Children will enjoy the large, sandy, play area and an innovative, repurposed manhole; a fish pond; face painting; and arts and crafts, while enthusiasts of all ages will enjoy the Show and Shine classic car show sponsored by CUPE Local 394.

National Public Works Week will also be marked earlier in the week with the awarding of two $500 scholarships, jointly sponsored by the City of Richmond and CUPE Local 394, to Richmond students who have chosen to enter into the public works trades.
